Joe Biden, Recipient of the AIRI 2017 Public Service Award

Advocacy The AIRI Public Service Award is presented to exemplary leaders who demonstrate a strong commitment to biomedical research and a consistent willingness to work with AIRI on issues of mutual interest.
AIRI is pleased to award Joe Biden, 47th Vice President of the United States, the AIRI 2017 Public Service Award for his strong commitment to biomedical research and accelerating cancer research.  Through his leadership of the White House Cancer Moonshot Initiative, an additional $1.8 billion over 10 years is directed to the National Institutes of Health for the Beau Biden Cancer Moonshot. Additionally, his leadership brought together 20 federal agencies and departments, as well as more than 70 private sector organizations, to form innovative collaborations across all areas of cancer research.  It is due to his efforts that these partners are all dedicating their authority, talents, and unique capabilities to achieving a decade’s worth of progress in five years on cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
One of these partners is the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, an AIRI member, which Vice President Biden visited in March 2016.  He continues to cite what he learned during that visit in public speeches, now as founder of the Biden Foundation and the Biden Cancer Initiative. It is a testament to Vice President’s commitment to public service that he turned the loss of his son to cancer into a broad-based initiative dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans. It is worth noting that in recognition for his decades of public service, President Barack Obama presented Vice President Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, with distinction.
Given his willingness to put the power of the second highest office in the United States behind advancing biomedical research and his continued commitment to pursuing a cure for cancer, AIRI is proud to present Vice President Joe Biden with the AIRI 2017 Public Service Award. Date and time of the presentation will be announced in the coming week
