Vice President of Development

The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI), a 250-person not-for-profit genomic-focused research institute is seeking a Vice President of Development.  This position will be responsible for creating, managing, planning, directing and executing a successful donor development and fundraising program. This comprehensive program should include, but not be limited to, the development and establishment of a strategic fundraising and development plan, infrastructure and operational plan, the build-up and generation of an annual multi-million dollar donations pipeline and cultivation of  related donor base, the creation and management of signature events to increase the Institute’s donations base, continued development of JCVI’s community profile and donor recognition and the management of Board of Trustee member relations to facilitate development initiatives. 
The position requires a self-starter who is a visionary and strategic thinker, yet also hands on and tactical. The ideal candidate will be articulate, poised, have business acumen, and be able to interact with high net worth individuals on a peer-to-peer level. They must possess excellent communication skills and be able to understand and translate complex scientific subjects into an exciting scientific message to which donors at all levels can easily relate. Strong team work skills and a flexible and positive attitude are a must. Direct experience in the life sciences arena is a plus.  
Successful candidates will have at least a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in development positions performing duties similar to the above. Non-profit or similar charitable fundraising experience is required. Candidates must demonstrate the consistent generation of a multi-million dollar donations or charitable giving revenue stream primarily attributable to the candidate’s efforts as a lead. Qualified candidates will have current access to a large donor base of individuals (locally, nationally and internationally) with substantial giving capacity.
This position will report to the JCVI President and will be based in La Jolla, California office. Significant travel will be required.
