Open Rank Veterinarian – SNPRC (19-063)
Southwest National Primate Research Center and Texas Biomedical Research Institute located in San Antonio, Texas are seeking an open rank Assistant, Associate or Full Veterinarian to be responsible for ensuring appropriate veterinary care and regulatory compliance consistent with Standard Operating Procedures and in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act and The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. This includes but is not limited to implementation of the preventative health program, disease surveillance and prevention, administering analgesics and anesthetics, participating in the DEA controlled substance program, surgical and post-surgical care of research animals, diagnosis and treatments of diseases. The successful candidate will provide clinical care and preventative medicine support to the SNPRC’s production, research and retirement colonies of nonhuman primates (NHP’s). Duties may include participating in veterinary care of Texas Biomedical Research Institute’s rodent vivarium. This position will require the person to implement research protocols and provide research support by reviewing protocols, advising Principal Investigators on proper use of animal models, overseeing research procedures, development of research techniques, improve animal care through refinement, welfare and management practices.
 
Requirements for this position are: Candidates must possess a D.V.M./V.M.D. degree from AVMA accredited university, valid license to practice in the United States and USDA accreditation or be able to become USDA accredited. Requires two or more years of experience beyond the doctoral degree in primate clinical medicine. Preferred: Five years of primate clinical medicine experience. Formal training in laboratory animal medicine. Five or more years of primate experience in a laboratory animal research setting. Preferred candidate is licensed in the state of Texas and able to obtain a DEA license. Proficient computer skills (Microsoft, Excel), technical writing skills, knowledge of review and development of study protocols, knowledge of regulatory requirements.
 
This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position. Texas Biomed business hours are Mondays through Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Texas Biomed is committed to a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug screen is required.
