Chief Operating Officer (GTRI)

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), a recognized leader in applied sciences and advanced technology solutions, seeks an experienced and innovative leader to serve as its inaugural Chief Operating Officer (COO). As a key member of the senior leadership team, the Chief Operating Officer will join GTRI during a period of sustained growth and excitement. As such, the Chief Operating Officer will provide strategic oversight and day-to-day direction to the research institute during a pivotal period of time. As GTRI continues to capitalize on its existing strengths and strong market presence, they will need an astute leader adept at leveraging their collective strengths, building a sustainable infrastructure, effectively overseeing human and fiscal resources, fostering a diverse and welcoming environment, and collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders. This highly visible role will serve as a strategic thought partner to the Director and other key leaders within the research institute, university, and state system. As such, the COO will have a strong track record and demonstrated success within a similarly complex, fast-paced environment.
Founded in 1934, Georgia Tech Research Institute is the nonprofit applied research division of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). GTRI develops advanced technology solutions and large-scale system prototypes to address the most difficult problems in national security, economic development, and the overall human condition. GTRI has rapidly grown to more than 2,600 employees supporting eight laboratories in over 20 locations around the country and performs more than $642 million of problem-solving research annually for government and industry.
The successful candidate will be an extraordinarily talented leader who brings a proven track record in high level strategic planning and operational execution within a complex research enterprise housed within governmental or industry setting. The COO must be an ambitious leader who has the prerequisite skills and necessary drive to effectively allocate and oversee the resources in support of this growing enterprise. Success in this role will be measured by effective organizational oversight, general management skills, as well as strong written and presentation skills. The COO must be an entrepreneur leader who is flexible in approach and comfortable with supporting a hugely successful and rapidly growing research institute.
The ideal candidate will have high-level operations leadership experience, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to lead and implement change in a proactive manner. The candidate must possess significant experience as a senior executive in a research, government, or business, organization of relevant size, scale and complexity, with a deep and broad background in operations, and a command of best practices in the field. The successful candidate will bring many of the following skills and qualities:
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field of study and 15+ years of relevant full-time experience with at least 5 years of experience in a management role
  • Excellent leadership skills, business acumen, and ability to effectively manage, lead and supervise a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excel at strategic thinking, be open to new perspectives and better ways to do things; and be creative, a visionary, and manage innovation well.
  • Experience in project management and closing out complex projects.
  • Proven track record of successful financial management.
  • Demonstrated experience in decision-making that has an organization-wide impact.
  • Must have the ability to delegate effectively.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, strategic planning, change management, collaboration, and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated executive-level communication and influencing skills with the ability to resolve issues, build consensus among groups of diverse internal/external stakeholders, and negotiate and mediate conflict.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret Clearance.
