Chief Financial Officer (CSHL)

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is presently seeking an ideal candidate for the role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The CFO is responsible for leading the finance, accounting, audit, and operations support functions, assuring that the right organizational structures, people, tools and strategies are in place. The CFO is a key advisor to the Board of Trustees and Board Committees (particularly the Executive, Investment, Finance and Audit & Risk Committees). The CFO provides both strategic and hands-on leadership, is responsible for financial strategy decisions, oversees budgeting, financial modeling and analysis, accounting practices and procedures, Indirect Cost and Fringe proposals and negotiations, and all borrowing, investing and cash management functions. The CFO is responsible for the Laboratory's relationships with lending institutions and rating agencies, and for formulating and executing financing strategies to meet capital and operational funding requirements. In addition, the CFO is a key contributor to the formulation and execution of the Laboratory's long-term planning efforts.
The CFO, with other members of the executive administration management team, reports to the Chief Operating Officer. The CFO leads a team of twenty-three through two direct reports and has fiduciary responsibility to the Chairs of the Board Committees.
The successful candidate for this position will be a visionary with a demonstrated track record of success in leading a multifaceted financial management function, including recent experience as a VP Finance or CFO, or a similar level position, for an organization with revenues over $100 million. The preferred candidate will have a combination of both for-profit and non-profit financial management experience. Prior experience working with federally funded grants & contracts in an academic/ research environment is highly desired. The successful candidate must be a team-player who has effectively interacted, both internally and externally, with individuals at all levels, including individuals in the "C-Suite", sophisticated Board members, financial officials and senior government leaders.
  • Bachelor degree in Finance/Accounting required; MBA in Finance highly desired
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • At least 10 years’ progressively responsible managerial experience within an academic/research environment
